SUBORDER CYPRINOIDEI

HEAD naked. Adipose fin absent. Barbels are often present. Swim bladder consists of two or more chambers. Intermuscular bones (epineurals and epipleurals) are present, both upper and lower. Mouth more or less protrusible. Inferior pharyngeal bones noticeably enlarged, sickle-shaped, with large pharyngeal Teeth. Teeth absent on the jaws. Representatives of the suborder are distributed in fresh (occasionally brackish) waters of Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America, but are absent in Central and South America, Australia, New Zealand, the northeastern islands of Indonesia, and Madagascar.

The suborder Cyprinoidei comprises seven families. Representatives of two families are found in Ukraine.
