ORDER CARP-LIKE FISHES CYPRINIFORMES

The body is covered with scales or naked. In many species, jaw Teeth are absent, but pharyngeal teeth are present on the lower pharyngeal bones, arranged in one to three rows. Parietal and subopercles bones are present. The third and fourth vertebrae are not fused, and the Weberian apparatus is present. Representatives of the order are widely distributed mainly in fresh and brackish waters across all continents except Australia, New Zealand, and Madagascar. The order Cypriniformes comprises three suborders—Characoidei, Gymnotoidei, and Cyprinoidei—of which only representatives of the latter suborder are found within Ukraine.
