DIAGNOSTIC CHARACTERS AND MEASUREMENTS OF FISH

The text employs standard morphological characters generally accepted in ichthyology [Pravdin, 1966]. Unless otherwise specified, the body length of fish is taken as the distance from the tip of the snout to the end of the scale cover (l). Body proportions are expressed as percentages of this length, while the proportions of HEAD parts are expressed as percentages of the head length (Fig. 1).

Morphological standards are designated by the following Abbreviations: number of branched rays in the dorsal fin - D, in the anal fin - A, in the pectoral fins - P, in the pelvic fins - V, in the caudal fin - C, number of transverse scale rows - Squ, scales in the lateral line - l. l., scales above the lateral line - Squ1 , scales below the lateral line - Squ2 , number of vertebrae - vert., number of gill rakers - sp. br., pharyngeal tooth formula - d. f; plastic characters (body length l, cm; as percentages of body length - % l, maximum body height - H, minimum body height - h, P - V - PV, V - A - VA, head length - c; as percentages of head length - % c.
