GENUS VIMBA - VIMBA FITZINGER
The body is moderately elongated or relatively deep, laterally compressed. Behind the pelvic fins, the belly is laterally compressed, forming a keel devoid of scales. The back is laterally compressed, featuring a scale-free strip in front of the dorsal fin. Behind the dorsal fin, There is a keel covered by scales folded along the middle (such a keel is absent in the species Vimba melanops Heck.). The dorsal fin is short, typically with III 8 (9) rays, while the anal fin is noticeably longer, with III (15) 16-22 rays. The caudal fin has distinct, pointed lobes. The lateral line is complete, almost straight, containing 48-64 scales. Gill rakers are relatively short, numbering 12-21. Pharyngeal Teeth are uniserial, laterally compressed, typically 5-5. The Mouth is inferior, semi-lunar. Representatives of the genus are distributed in the basins of the North Sea, Baltic Sea, Black Sea, Caspian Sea, Sea of Marmara, Aegean Sea, and in the endorheic Lake Eğirdir (Turkey). The genus Vimba encompasses two species, both of which are found within Ukraine.
