The capsule surrounding the gland is extremely thin. The parenchyma is divided into lobules. The lobules contain Three types of secretory units: protein (serous) (1), mucous (2), and, most abundantly, mixed (3). The central PARTS OF THE mixed terminal secretory units consist of mucous Cells, or mucocytes (4). Serocytes, which form protein demilunes (of Gianuzzi) (5), adjoin the lateral bases of the mucocytes. These are not typical serocytes, but rather seromucous cells that can produce both protein secretion and mucus. Protein acini in the sublingual gland resemble those in the parotid gland, but are observed here in small numbers. Mucous terminal units consist exclusively of mucocytes. The system of excretory ducts is also similar to that of the parotid and submandibular glands, but is even less developed. These include intercalated (6), striated (7), and interlobular (8) excretory ducts.
