Staining: hematoxylin and eosin.

Magnification: x56.

The slide is a vertical section of the upper eyelid. Under low magnification, the anterior (cutaneous) and posterior (conjunctival) surfaces are visible. The cutaneous surface (I) is formed by thin Skin (1) containing vellus Hair and Sebaceous Glands. Eyelashes (2) are arranged in two to four rows along the margin of the eyelid. The ducts of the glands of Zeis (3) and Moll (4) open into the funnels of their hair follicles. Inside the section, closer to the posterior surface, lies the tarsal plate (eyelid Cartilage) (5), within which branched sebaceous (Meibomian) glands (6) are located, opening along the eyelid margin. Anterior to the tarsal plate, striated Muscle fibers of the orbicularis oculi muscle (7) can be observed. The posterior surface of the eyelid transitions into the conjunctiva of the Eyeball.
