A nerve, or nerve trunk, consists of a collection of nerve fibers and their surrounding sheaths.

The slide shows round cross-sections of myelinated and Cytology/practical/64.html">Unmyelinated nerve fibers. A myelinated nerve fiber (1) appears as a black ring corresponding to the myelin sheath, with a light center representing the axon. Among the thick myelinated fibers, cross-sections of thin unmyelinated nerve fibers (2) are visible, along with yellow Connective Tissue septa (3) containing capillaries (4). This is the endoneurium. In addition, bundles of nerve fibers are surrounded by a connective tissue sheath known as the perineurium (5). The entire nerve is enclosed by the epineurium (6).
