WORKSHOP IN HISTOLOGY, CYTOLOGY AND EMBRYOLOGY - 2016

Chapter 4. TISSUES

Slide 57. Neurofibrils in spinal cord neurons.

Staining: silver impregnation.

Magnification: x400.

The slide shows a cross-section of the Spinal Cord. The color of the specimen ranges from brown to black. To the naked eye, the Gray matter of the spinal cord is clearly visible in the center, shaped like a butterfly (or the letter "H") with wide anterior (1) and narrow posterior (2) horns. The gray matter is surrounded by White matter (3).

Under low magnification, we examine the gray matter containing Neurons (4). Under high magnification, we can distinctly see that a neuron is a Cell with processes (5), a round, clear Nucleus (6), a nucleolus (7), and neurofibrils (8) within the neuroplasm. The neurofibrils appear as delicate, elongated black threads.
