Slide 124. Prostate gland.

The slide contains two sections. The first section passes through the glandular parenchyma (A), and the second through the Urethra (B).

A. Externally, the prostate is covered by a Connective Tissue capsule (1) containing smooth myocytes (2), adipocytes (3), and Blood Vessels. Septa (4) extend inward from the capsule, dividing the gland into lobules. The parenchyma contains scattered mucous alveolar glands (5), whose excretory ducts open into the prostatic urethra. The terminal secretory units consist of two Cell types: tall columnar prostatocytes and intercalated (principal, basal) Cells located between their bases (6). Spherical structures—Prostatic Calculi (concretions) (7)—are frequently observed within the lumens of the secretory units.

B. In the section passing through the urethra, a cross-section of this organ is visible in the center of the slide. The urethral lumen has a stellate shape. Its wall comprises a mucosa (8) with transitional epithelium and a well-developed lamina propria; a muscular layer (9) consisting of an inner longitudinal and an outer circular layer; and an adventitia (10) separating the urethra from the glandular parenchyma.
