Aquatic or marsh plants with alternate, opposite, or whorled sheathing leaves. Flowers are actinomorphic or zygomorphic, gathered into various inflorescences, bisexual or unisexual. Fruits are of various types.

This order is one of the most primitive and ancient groups of monocotyledons, comprising 11 orders, 18 families, and 490 species. In Ukraine, 44 species belonging to 10 families grow.
