Class Bryopsida, or True Mosses

The gametophytes of bryopsids are plants with well-developed vegetative Organs: a stem with a differentiated Anatomical Structure, spirally arranged phylloids, and rhizoids. The phylloids are entire, frequently with a midrib. Antheridia and archegonia occur in groups at the apex of the stem or its lateral branches. The sporophyte consists of a FOOT, a seta, and a capsule. In most species, the capsule opens by a lid (operculum) and contains a central Column (columella). The Class Bryopsida comprises about 14,000 species and is divided into three subclasses: Sphagnidae, Andreaeidae, and Bryidae. Aquatic and wetland species are known among both peat mosses and true mosses.
