11.2. GENERATION AND PROPAGATION OF ACTION POTENTIALS

The generation and propagation of action potentials and electrical impulses occur from The ROOT System to the apex and vice versa in response to external factors. Among the plants in which action potentials have been recorded are legumes, tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, and buckwheat. The amplitude of action potentials measured in plants ranges from 5-80 mV and significantly depends on the type of external stimulus. The propagation velocity of electrical signals lies in the range of 0.05-20 cm·s-1. A potential pathway for the propagation of action potentials is the phloem sieve tube system, which forms a continuous chain of Plasma Membranes. The Specificity of the electrical signal used by the plant for information transmission is achieved through spatial and temporal variations in parameters such as pulse amplitude, duration, polarization, and propagation velocity.
