Conformational changes induced by phosphorylation
One of the possible outcomes of transferring a phosphate group to a functional group of a protein is the induction of a conformational change in the protein molecule. Indeed, there is compelling Evidence indicating the presence of such changes during the action of ATP-dependent ion pumps (Chap. 5, Sec. B,2,c) and in Muscle contraction (Addendum 10-E). Conformational changes may also result from the phosphorylation of protein regulatory sites. It is quite possible that the phosphorylation of an imidazole group hydrogen-bonded to the C = O group of the amide moiety in the polypeptide chain of a protein molecule leads to tautomeric transformations similar to the one given in equation (6-84). This may facilitate a conformational change or drive the protein into an "energy-rich" state capable of spontaneously altering its shape, as occurs During muscle contraction.
