Folic acid (N-pteroyl-L-glutamic acid, folacin, vitamin Bc, L. casei Liver growth factor) is widely distributed in nature; it has been found in liver, spinach, Yeast, and many other sources. A number of related compounds are known, including N-pteroyl-γ-glutamyl-γ-glutamylglutamic acid and derivatives containing more than three glutamic acid residues [398]. The presence of the γ-glutamyl linkage in the folic acid molecule is of particular interest, since analogues with α-linkages are less active than folic acid, while N-pteroyl-D-glutamic acid appears to lack biological activity. The metabolic role of folic acid is discussed below (p. 327).
