Glycoproteins — Distribution and Functions

Glycoproteins are found in the majority of organisms, ranging from Bacteria to humans. Many animal Viruses also contain glycoproteins, and some of these viruses have been extensively studied, partly due to the convenience they offer for research.

Glycoproteins constitute a large and diverse group of Proteins with varied Functions (Table 54.1); their carbohydrate content ranges from 1% to 85% or more by weight. The exact role of oligosaccharide chains in glycoprotein function remains to be definitively established despite intensive research; some of the proposed functions of these chains are listed in Table 54.2.
