Pike-like Fishes (Esociformes) are a small group of predatory fishes with greatly elongated jaws armed with sharp Teeth. The swim bladder connects with the gut. The northern pike (Esox lucius) is distributed in rivers, lakes, and the desalinated areas of southern seas. It leads a sedentary lifestyle, typically lurking among beds of aquatic vegetation. It feeds on fish, frogs, and waterfowl chicks. Its commercial value is relatively low. Large specimens can reach weights of over 35 kg and lengths exceeding 1.5 m. Spawning occurs in the spring in shallow coastal areas.
