Prokaryotes: A Systematic Survey
Gram-Negative Facultatively Anaerobic Rods (Group 8)

All species belonging to this systematic group are characterized by the products of their Fermentation; under anaerobic conditions, they obtain the energy necessary for growth through fermentation processes, releasing A number of organic acids in the process. Formic acid is not quantitatively dominant, yet remains a characteristic product. Typical representatives of this group, such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella, and Shigella, inhabit the intestine (enteron), which is why the entire group is referred to as Enterobacteriaceae. These Bacteria will be discussed in Section 8.4.
