7.6. Modern Trends in BACTERIAL SYSTEMATICS
There are several Classification systems based on Different types of similarity (or relatedness) among Bacteria: 1) phenotypic — similarity is assessed based on morphological and physiological traits; 2) chemotaxonomic (essentially partial phenotypic systems) based on chemotaxonomic markers; 3) hierarchical (genealogical) — relatedness is determined by THE ORIGIN OF organisms; 4) phylogenetic (evolutionary) — based on the origin of organisms mapped onto a timescale; 5) genotypic — similarity is evaluated based on genetic material (in this case, The concepts of similarity and relatedness coincide).
These systems are the result of utilizing not only different Methods, but above all, different methodologies.
