7. PROKARYOTE SYSTEMATICS

7.5. CHARACTERISTICS OF TAXA ACCORDING TO THE NINTH EDITION OF BERGEY'S MANUAL OF SYSTEMATIC BACTERIOLOGY

According to Bergey's Manual of Systematic Bacteriology, all Bacteria are grouped into the kingdom Procaryotae and divided into four divisions;

I. Gracilicutes (gram-negative eubacteria with a Cell wall);

II. Firmicutes (gram-positive eubacteria with a cell wall);

III. Tenericutes (eubacteria lacking a cell wall);

IV. Mendosicutes (archaebacteria).

The names of the bacterial divisions are derived from Latin words: cutes — Skin; gracilus — thin, slender; firmus — strong; tener — soft, tender; mendosus — spurious.

The divisions are subdivided into classes, classes into sections, sections into orders, tribes, families, and genera.
