Medical Genetic Counseling
Organization of Medical Genetic Care for the Population of Ukraine

Medical genetic care for the population of Ukraine is provided by specialists from interdistrict medical genetic offices/consultation clinics (IDMGO), medical genetic consultations at family planning and human reproduction centers, regional medical genetic centers/consultations (RMGC), specialized medical genetic centers (SMGC), the Ukrainian Scientific Center for Medical Genetics, the Lviv Research Institute of Hereditary Pathology, as well as clinical research institutes of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and higher medical educational institutions. The work of this service is supervised by the Coordination Council for Medical Genetics under the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and the chief specialist of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

Interdistrict medical genetic offices/consultations (IDMGO) are established in areas serving a population of 300,000 or more. They are based in central district and city hospitals. An IDMGO is staffed by a pediatrician or obstetrician-gynecologist who has undergone specialized training in medical genetics. IDMGOs provide consultations for families and individuals with suspected hereditary conditions, establish preliminary diagnoses, maintain registries of families with hereditary pathologies and Congenital Malformations, provide follow-up care (dispensary observation) for families and patients with Hereditary diseases, and oversee mass screening programs.

Regional (city) medical genetic offices/consultations (RMGC) are established on The basis of regional (city) hospitals. Their staff includes medical geneticists (pediatricians, obstetricians-gynecologists). They feature cytogenetic and biochemical laboratories. In addition to providing MEDICAL Genetic Counseling to families regarding reproductive prognosis, coordinating the work of interdistrict IDMGOs, maintaining registries, supervising mass screening, and offering consultations, they actively identify patients with hereditary pathologies, perform ultrasound prenatal Diagnostics, and conduct cytogenetic and biochemical diagnostics of hereditary diseases.

Specialized medical genetic centers provide specialized care to the public in the Diagnosis, Prevention, and Treatment of patients with specific hereditary conditions. Currently, there are 8 specialized medical genetic centers operating in Ukraine, focusing on the Diagnosis and treatment of various groups of hereditary pathologies (chromosomal, multifactorial, and Monogenic Disorders), as well as performing all types of prenatal diagnostics.

Professionals across all levels of the medical genetic service actively promote medical genetic knowledge among the general public.
