Of the two general types of reproduction—sexual and asexual—Population Genetics focuses primarily on sexual reproduction, which ensures a substantial level of genetic Variability through recombination. The entire diversity of sexual reproduction modes can be divided into several types.

Panmixia implies an equal probability of any pair of opposite-sex individuals producing joint offspring, with no selectivity whatsoever. The presence of such selectivity occurs in Various Forms of mating assortativity—the preferential formation of specific types of mating pairs. The extreme cases of assortativity are outbreeding and Inbreeding.

Outbreeding is the crossing of the most genetically distant partners: lines, subspecies, or, in certain cases, species or even genera. The latter two Selection/46.html">Types of crosses are also referred to as interspecific or intergeneric Hybridization. Crossing between genetically close forms is termed inbreeding. This typically involves mating within the same genetic line, between relatives, or self-Fertilization (for instance, self-pollination, which is common among plants).
