Streptogramins
Streptogramins represent a novel group of macrolide derivatives currently undergoing extensive clinical evaluation. This Class includes quinupristin/dalfopristin (Synercid) and virginiamycin.
Their spectrum of activity covers the majority of gram-positive pathogens, including Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., and E. faecalis (though inactive against E. faecium), alongside gram-negative organisms such as H. influenzae, M. catarrhalis, and others. A key characteristic of these agents is their efficacy against microorganisms possessing acquired resistance to Other Antibiotics—such as macrolide-resistant staphylococci and streptococci, methicillin-resistant staphylococci, vancomycin-resistant enterococci, and penicillin-resistant viridans group streptococci. Certain streptogramins also exhibit activity against atypical pathogens like C. pneumoniae, M. pneumoniae, M. hominis, and U. urealyticum.
Indications for Use. Clinical data demonstrate the high efficacy of streptogramins in treating Skin and soft tissue infections, community-acquired and hospital-acquired Pneumonia, and systemic Infections caused by multiresistant gram-positive microorganisms.
