Stenosing Atherosclerosis of the coronary Arteries of the Heart

The specimen shows tortuous and thickened coronary arteries of The Heart. In the apical region, There is a large grey-colored focus of Post-infarction cardiosclerosis. The thickening is caused by the deposition of atherosclerotic plaques. As a result, the arterial lumen is narrowed by 25–75%, which leads to impaired myocardial Blood supply. The consequence is myocardial ischemia, dystrophic changes, and ischemic necrosis (infarction). A potential outcome is cardiosclerosis, characterized by the replacement of myocardial tissue with Connective Tissue.
