Ingrown toenail

An ingrown nail, or onychocryptosis, refers to a nail plate that cuts into the adjacent soft Tissues along its medial or lateral edge. It is frequently complicated by inflammation or wound suppuration at the site of Skin penetration, which is the primary reason patients seek surgical consultation.

The Treatment of choice for an ingrown nail is the excision of the ingrown portion, and to prevent recurrence, it is advisable to ablate the nail matrix corresponding to that area. In cases of suppuration at the site of nail edge embedding, nail resection is required, and the wound should be irrigated with antiseptics or betadine and drained until complete healing is achieved.

Delayed wound healing indicates a compromised immune status, which must also be addressed and managed accordingly.
