Nasal Cavity

The Airways include the Nasal cavity, nasopharynx, Larynx, Trachea, and Bronchi.

The nasal cavity (cavum nasi) consists of the vestibule, formed by the cavity located beneath the cartilaginous part of the Nose, and the nasal cavity proper, which includes the respiratory and olfactory regions.

The vestibule (vestibulum nasale) is lined with stratified squamous epithelium, which is a continuation of the Skin's epithelial covering. Beneath the epithelium, in the Connective Tissue layer, lie Sebaceous Glands and the roots of vibrissae (stiff nasal hairs).

The nasal cavity proper is covered by a mucous membrane consisting of pseudostratified columnar ciliated epithelium and a connective tissue lamina propria. The epithelium, resting on the basement membrane, contains four Cell types: 1) ciliated; 2) microvillous; 3) basal; 4) goblet.

The lamina propria of the mucous membrane consists of loose Fibrous connective tissue with an Abundance of elastic fibers. It contains the secretory units of mucous glands, whose excretory ducts open onto the epithelial surface.
