Phlegmon

Phlegmon of the newborn is classified among severe pyoinflammatory Skin and subcutaneous tissue infections. The portal of entry is typically the skin or the umbilical wound. The condition is characterized by rapid progression, with necrosis predominating over inflammation. It has an acute onset during the 2nd to 3rd week of life, manifesting as Sleep disturbances, refusal to feed, agitation, and fever. Within a few hours, skin erythema, edema, and tenderness appear, followed by skin detachment and cyanosis.

Treatment is surgical, involving incision and drainage. General antibiotic therapy and detoxification measures are mandatory.
