Bones of the hand – Metacarpal bones

The Metacarpal bones [metacarpals], ossa metacarpi [metacarpalia], are represented by five tubular bones (see Fig. 65). Their numbering begins from the thumb, corresponding to the ordinal numbers [I–V]. Each metacarpal bone consists of a body, corpus metacarpale, a proximal end known as the base, basis metacarpalis, and a distal end known as the HEAD, caput metacarpale, for articulation with the proximal phalanx. The bases of the metacarpal bones articulate with the distal row of Carpal Bones. The articular surfaces of the bases of bones II–IV are saddle-shaped, while their heads are convex.
