4. VAGINA

The Vagina is an unpaired, tube-like organ approximately 8 cm in length, located in the lesser pelvis cavity between the Urethra anteriorly and the rectum posteriorly. Its upper end encompasses the cervix of the Uterus, while its lower end opens into the vaginal vestibule. The vagina is covered by the Peritoneum only in its upper part. The portion of the vagina surrounding the cervix is referred to as the vaginal fornix. There is an anterior fornix and a deeper posterior fornix. In virgins, the vaginal orifice is partially closed by a mucosal fold known as the hymen, which leaves a small opening. In women who have given birth, only small caruncles remain of the hymen.

The vaginal walls consist of Connective Tissue, muscular, and mucosal layers. The mucous membrane features transverse folds.
