Staining: hematoxylin and eosin.

Magnification: x400.

Under low magnification, position the slide so that the anterior epithelium (1) of the cornea (stratified squamous non-keratinized) is at the top. The layers of this epithelium are: basal layer (2), parabasal (spinous) layer (3), intermediate layer, and superficial layer (layer of squamous Cells) (4).

Beneath the epithelium under high magnification, one can distinguish a thin anterior limiting lamina (5), the substantia propria (6)

of the cornea consisting of 200-250 thin, regularly alternating Connective Tissue lamellae, the posterior limiting lamina (7), and the posterior epithelium (8) of the cornea - a simple squamous epithelium facing the anterior chamber of the eye.
