The fetal part of the Placenta is externally covered by the amniotic membrane with amniotic epithelium (1). Beneath the epithelium lies the chorionic plate (2), which contains large Blood Vessels. Deeper are the villi (3), composed of chorionic (extraembryonic) mesoderm with chorionic vessels. The surface of the villi is covered by trophoblast (4); they are immersed in maternal blood (see description of slide No. 21). In the second half of Pregnancy, the trophoblast thins out in places, and the villi become covered with a fibrin-like oxyphilic mass known as Langhans fibrinoid (5).
