Family Brachytheciaceae

This family includes monoecious, dioecious, and polygamous plants, among which aquatic and wetland mosses are found. Stems are branched, densely leafy, and without paraphyllia. Leaves are rounded, lanceolate, or oblong-lanceolate, concave, entire or toothed, with a single costa. Sporophytes are produced on short lateral branches. The capsule is inclined or horizontal, less commonly erect, ovoid or oblong-cylindrical, with a weakly developed neck or without one. The peristome is double. The operculum is conical.

The family comprises about 500 species, including aquatic and wetland plants, notably stream-dwelling brachythecium (Brachythecium rivulare) and river-bank rhynchostegium (Rhynchostegium riparioides).
