5.12.1. Preparation of Material for Microscopy

Biological specimens can be studied either alive or fixed. In the latter case, for more detailed examination, the material can be sectioned and treated with various stains to reveal and identify specific structures. Both temporary and permanent mounts can be prepared from the specimen under investigation.
