Acetone, which is formed via the spontaneous (non-enzymatic) decarboxylation of acetoacetate, is not utilized by the body.
Ketone Bodies—acetoacetate and beta-hydroxybutyrate—are synthesized in the Liver, readily cross mitochondrial and cellular membranes, and enter the bloodstream. They are transported via the blood to all other Tissues.
UTILIZATION OF KETONE BODIES
This process takes place in the Cell/35.html">Mitochondria (except in hepatocytes). ß-hydroxybutyrate is converted into acetoacetate, and acetoacetate reacts with succinyl-CoA, an intermediate of The Citric Acid Cycle.
