Carbohydrate Metabolism and Functions
Glycogen Biosynthesis — Glycogenesis
The initial reactions yield UDP-glucose (reaction 3), which is an activated form of glucose that directly enters the polymerization reaction (reaction 4). This latter reaction is catalyzed by Glycogen synthase, which adds glucose to an oligosaccharide or to a glycogen molecule already present in The Cell, elongating the chain with new monomers. The preparation and incorporation of each monomer into the growing polysaccharide chain requires the energy of 1 mol of ATP and 1 mol of UTP.
