Ab initio protein structure prediction
Energy Functions
This section examines the Structure/5.html">Energy Functions used for ab initio modeling. It should be noted that energy functions are often closely intertwined with search Procedures, and separating these components causes the modeling Procedure to lose its efficiency and reliability. The Classification of functions used comprises two groups: a) Rational energy functions; b) empirical energy functions. Membership in a particular group depends on whether statistical data from known protein spatial structures are utilized. Several of the most promising Methods from each group, distinguished by their modeling accuracy and uniqueness, are discussed in greater detail. Table 1.1 lists ab initio modeling methods and provides information on various method properties, such as energy functions, conformational search algorithms, Model Selection techniques, and characteristic computation times.
