Introduction
Fig. 1 clearly illustrates the striking pace at which new Amino Acids have been discovered in recent years. The sharp rise in the curve after 1940 was largely driven by the widespread adoption of chromatographic Methods combined with the highly sensitive ninhydrin colour reaction. There is no doubt that by the time this book is published, the number of known amino acids will exceed the figure indicated in Fig. 1. This section discusses amino acids that are not regularly found in Proteins, as well as those that are components of Other Compounds or occur in a free state; in addition, A number of amino acids representing metabolic intermediates are considered.
