Klein and Linzer [372] demonstrated that the administration of proline to certain plants enhances the synthesis of proline methylbetaine—stachydrine [371, 378, 389].

In alfalfa, 2-C14-Ornithine was not incorporated into stachydrine [373]. These findings indicate that no significant conversion of ornithine to proline takes place in this plant; instead, proline in alfalfa is synthesized primarily via the pathway involving glutamic acid—possibly through glutamic acid semialdehyde.
