Glycoproteins – Secretory Locus
The secretory locus (Se) encodes a specific fucosyltransferase in secretory Organs, such as exocrine glands, but not in erythrocytes. Accordingly, for example, individuals with the SeSe or Sese genotype will synthesize the precursor of A and B Antigens in their salivary exocrine glands, and in the presence of specific A or B transferases, they will secrete A or B antigens (or both) (Table 54.8). Individuals with the sese genotype will not secrete A or B antigens; however, if the H allele and A or B alleles are present, their erythrocytes will be able to express A, B, or both antigens.
