Glycoproteins - Sugars Present in Glycoproteins

Although about 200 Monosaccharides have been found in nature, fewer than 12 of them are present in the oligosaccharide chains of Glycoproteins (Table 54.3). Most of these sugars were discussed in Chapter 14. The ends of the oligosaccharide chains feature N-acetylneuraminic acid (NeuAc), usually attached to preterminal galactose (Gal) or N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc) residues. The other sugars listed in the table typically occupy positions closer to the middle of the chain.
