The energy required for an animal Organism to function must be supplied in the form of suitable "fuel." Understanding how the organism extracts this energy from food is fundamental to comprehending normal Nutrition and METABOLISM. Depletion of energy resources leads to death by starvation, and certain forms of nutritional disorders are caused by energy imbalances (pellagra, cachexia). The rate of energy consumption, characterized by the rate of metabolic processes, is regulated by THYROID Hormones. The storage of excess energy in the body as nutrients leads to obesity, which is very common in Western countries.
