The principles formulated above are illustrated graphically in Figs. 8.1 and 8.2, which show reaction profiles depicting the relationship between ∆G, ∆GF, and ∆GD. Note that ∆G is negative in Fig. 8.1 (∆G<0) and positive in Fig. 8.2 (∆G>0); nevertheless, in both cases, ∆GF is positive (∆GF>0) and ∆GD is negative (∆GD<0). Therefore, as noted above, the sign and magnitude of ∆G do not yet provide any indication of the sign and magnitude of ∆GF or ∆GD.
