Folic acid deficiency is the most common occurrence

Worldwide, Folic acid deficiency (Fig. 26-13) is recognized as the most prevalent vitamin deficiency. Most commonly, however, it occurs in underdeveloped tropical countries, where virtually everyone experiences at least a moderate shortfall of folic acid.

In the United States, many low-income and elderly individuals suffer from folic acid deficiency, which manifests as anemia, weight loss, and generalized fatigue. Folic acid deficiency is also frequently observed in pregnant women and neonates. Furthermore, a shortage of this vitamin is characteristic of tropical sprue, a disorder caused by impaired absorption of multiple nutrients in the Small Intestine.

Folic acid is abundant in leafy green vegetables, Liver, Yeast, and meat; however, it can be destroyed during food preparation and by the action of reducing agents.
