Mass spectrometers used for determining the Introduction/19.html">Primary Structure of Peptides must meet two basic requirements. They must possess high sensitivity and, at maximum sensitivity, be capable of recording ions with masses up to 1000 a.m.u. In the author's research, KRATOS MS-902 and MS-50 mass spectrometers, as well as the VG Analytical ZAB instrument, were used, though other devices are also suitable. Acquiring a mass spectrometer for a small research group focused on Cell/13.html">Protein Structure determination may seem like an overly extravagant undertaking. However, considering the versatility of this instrument, which can be applied to many other biochemical problems, one's perspective should be reconsidered; a mass spectrometer should be preferred over an apparatus designed solely for determining the Amino Acid Sequence of Proteins.
