The Classification of bony Fishes is constantly being revised and refined. One of the most widely accepted schemes is that proposed by T.S. Rass and G.U. Lindberg.

Amiiformes and Lepisosteiformes are often grouped into the division of bony ganoids, Holostei.

The remaining orders are grouped into the division of teleost fishes, Teleostei (about 20,000 species), which comprises 8–10 superorders containing 30–40 orders.
