Empyema of the Gallbladder associated with cholelithiasis

The specimen shows an enlarged gallbladder containing Bile mixed with purulent exudate. Pressure from calculi on the gallbladder wall may lead to necrosis (pressure sores), potentially resulting in perforation, adhesion formation, fistula, or empyema. Gallstones frequently trigger inflammation by traumatizing tissue, facilitating bacterial entry, causing stasis, and serving as the underlying cause of cholelithiasis.
