Treatment of Meningitis in Children
The management of Purulent meningitis remains a significant challenge in pediatric infectious disease practice. This is primarily because the clinical picture is dominated by general infectious symptoms common to most infectious diseases, whereas the severity of cerebral and meningeal syndromes varies depending on the child's age, the severity and duration of the illness, the etiological factor, and other causes. These circumstances, combined with a lack of clinical awareness regarding purulent meningitis and, in some cases, insufficient specific knowledge on the part of the physician, lead to late Diagnosis and hospital admission, often resulting in inappropriate Treatment and, consequently, high mortality rates. However, the disease outcome and the frequency of sequelae depend directly on accurate and, most importantly, timely treatment. The treatment of patients with purulent meningitis is carried out in several stages:
1) Emergency care at the pre-hospital stage;
2) inpatient treatment;
3) rehabilitation;
4) follow-up dispensary observation.
Serous meningitis manifests with a varying degree of clinical severity—ranging from mild, hard-to-diagnose forms to severe cases accompanied by life-threatening syndromes. However, regardless of the severity of clinical manifestations, the cornerstone of treating serous meningitis is adherence to the fundamental principles of therapy, which are similar to those for purulent meningitis.
