An important objective for contemporary biological science in the near future is a radical shift in the patterns of exploiting natural plant resources. The extraction of edible, medicinal, industrial, and other useful plants from nature must be significantly reduced by bringing them into cultivation. To preserve rare and endangered species, it is necessary to expand the areas of nature reserves and sanctuaries. These conservation challenges can only be addressed comprehensively by drawing upon all the knowledge and practical achievements of modern botany.
